About Hermosa Beach
Hermosa Beach incorporated on January 14, 1907, according to the City of Hermosa Beach. At that time the city took ownership of its ocean frontage, which the original deed said should be kept as a beach playground for residents and visitors alike.
Today the city covers about 1.4 square miles, with 1.8 miles of beach frontage and a pier 1,228 feet long. For county public health programs, Hermosa Beach is part of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health’s South Bay Service Planning Area, known as SPA 8.
Sun protection for beach days
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a sunscreen labeled broad spectrum, with an SPF of 30 or higher, and water resistant. Broad spectrum means it helps protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
Water-resistant sunscreen stays on wet or sweaty skin for either 40 or 80 minutes, depending on the label, before you need to reapply. If a sunburn, rash or spot on your skin worries you, call us to book a medical visit.
