What is Oligio?
Oligio® is a monopolar radiofrequency (RF) device made by Wontech in Korea. A handpiece sends RF energy through the surface of the skin to heat the deeper layers. The heat is meant to tighten existing collagen and prompt your skin to make new collagen over the following months. Nothing is cut, and no needles are used.
Surface heat, focused ultrasound or microneedles
- Focused ultrasound points
- RF microneedle heat
- Surface RF warming
- Microfocused ultrasound (Ultherapy®): transducers focused at 1.5 mm, 3.0 mm and 4.5 mm
- RF microneedling (Infini): heat released through fine needles, at a depth set by the clinician
- Non-invasive radiofrequency (Oligio®): warming of the skin through the surface, without needles
What non-invasive RF can and can’t do
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, most people have one non-invasive RF treatment and feel some tightening right away. Full results take about 6 months, and results can last 2 to 3 years with the right skin care. Some people benefit from more than one treatment.
Skin tightening is more likely to help when there is only a small amount of loose skin. If you have a lot of sagging, it may not help much, and surgery produces more noticeable change. RF tightening is not a facelift, and results vary from person to person.
What to expect
Consultation
We review your health history, check for implants or metal near the area, and talk about realistic goals.
Preparation
The skin in the treatment area is cleansed.
Treatment
The handpiece is moved over the area in a grid pattern. You’ll feel heat; tell your provider if it becomes too uncomfortable.
Afterward
For most people, downtime is little to none. Use sunscreen daily and follow your aftercare instructions.
Results
Changes build gradually over the following months as collagen remodels.
How Oligio compares with Ultherapy and RF microneedling
| Treatment | How it works | FDA clearance | Typical downtime |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oligio® RF | Radiofrequency heat through the skin surface; no needles | Electrocoagulation and hemostasis; tightening not specifically cleared | Little to none |
| Ultherapy® | Focused ultrasound at set depths beneath the skin; no needles | Brow, under the chin and neck, and chest lines; newer body areas | Most people resume activities right away |
| Infini RF microneedling | Radiofrequency heat delivered through very fine needles | Facial wrinkles | Redness and swelling for a few days, up to a week |
No single option is right for everyone. We’ll suggest one based on your skin, health history and goals. Learn more about Ultherapy and Infini RF microneedling.
Side effects & risks
The FDA lists these possible complications of radiofrequency devices:
- pain or discomfort
- redness and swelling
- blisters and burns
- small bumps under the skin (nodules)
- changes in skin color
- scars
Call us right away if you notice blistering, a burn or skin that is slow to heal.
Who should not have it / talk to Dr. Shin first
RF treatment is not used if you have:
- a pacemaker, implanted defibrillator or other active implant
- metal under the skin from an implant or injury
- a tattoo with metal-containing ink in the treated area
Talk to Dr. Shin first if you:
- are pregnant
- have an intrauterine device (IUD); the FDA advises asking your doctor whether RF treatment poses added risk
- have a lot of loose skin and are also considering surgery
Common questions
Is Oligio FDA-approved for skin tightening?
No. Oligio is FDA-cleared, not FDA-approved, and its clearance is for electrocoagulation and hemostasis of soft tissue, a general dermatologic and surgical use. Skin tightening is not a specifically cleared indication. We explain this up front so you can weigh the option with clear information.
How long do radiofrequency skin tightening results last?
For non-invasive RF in general, the American Academy of Dermatology says results can last 2 to 3 years with the right skin care. Studies of Oligio itself are limited, so we can’t give an Oligio-specific timeframe. Skin keeps aging, and results vary from person to person.
How many Oligio treatments will I need?
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, most people have one non-invasive RF treatment, and some benefit from more than one. We’ll recommend a plan after examining your skin and talking through your goals, and we’ll explain what a realistic result looks like for you.
Does RF skin tightening hurt?
You’ll feel heat during treatment, and the FDA lists pain or discomfort among the possible side effects of RF devices. Comfort varies from person to person. Tell your provider if the heat feels too strong, and ask at your consultation which comfort measures are available.
Should I choose Oligio, Ultherapy or RF microneedling?
It depends on your skin and goals. Oligio and Ultherapy don’t use needles, and most people need little recovery time, while RF microneedling uses fine needles and usually means a few days of redness. Each has different FDA clearances and risks. We’ll help you compare them at your consultation.
Important information
- Oligio® is FDA-cleared (K221989) for use in dermatologic and general surgical procedures for electrocoagulation and hemostasis of soft tissue, meaning it uses heat to seal tissue and control bleeding. It is used for skin tightening, which is not a specifically cleared indication. Published studies of Oligio itself are limited, so the results information on this page comes from research on non-invasive radiofrequency in general.
